Lego City Fire Car Set (30347) Review

Lego released the Lego City Fire Car set this year in 2016. I obtained this set not so long ago from Smyths in the UK which was given to my daughter in a free party bag. They were also available in the US free with qualifying Lego purchases from Toys R Us back in February 2016. The set contains one minifigure and has a piece count of 53. The pieces come loose inside the polybag along with the instruction leaflet.
Minifigure

The set contains just one minifigure. He is a jolly looking gentleman with a happy smiling face showing his teeth. He has brown facial hair consisting of a beard and mustache as well as brown eye brows. He wears a white helmet. His torso is printed both sides. On the front he has a green hi-vis vest over his black overalls. The silver high visibilty strip is of a shiny metallic silver as is his belt buckle and part of his flashlight. His hi-vis vest has a pocket on one side and a red torch on the other. Finished off with a dark tan coloured utility belt. Over to the back of the torso the hi-vis strip is continued but divided by the fire service logo which is also metallic silver. The utility belt is also continued on the back and has a metallic silver radio on one side, in the middle is a metallic silver ring and then there are two looped bits on the right which are dark tan to match the belt. His legs are printed on the front with green and metallic silver on black as well as having print for his front pockets. To finish off he has dark grey gloves.
The Build

The build consists of a fire car and a green dust bin. The dust bin itself is green without a lid piece and comes with a transparent orange flame piece that fixes to a brown 1x1 round brick via a hole in the top of it. The brick and flame are not attached inside the dust bin and just sits inside loosely.
Now moving on to the fire car. It is primarily red in colour as it is an emergency fire vehicle. There is some white, grey and black pieces for contrast. On the front of the car is a radiator grill between two transparent yellow smooth tile studs which sits above a 1x4 white smooth tile. On the bonnet area is a printed piece with a fire service emblem. There is a variety of different pieces to then make up the rest of the shape of the vehicle which includes a white based black steering wheel. There is a 2x2 space for the minifigure to sit inside the car. Behind that is a white fence rail piece with two transparent blue smooth tile studs on top. These are the emegency lights when whizzing through busy Lego streets! Behind that there is a 2x2 area where the dustbin can rest. On the rear of the vehicle is two grey clips which hold a black fire axe and a black radio accessory. Integrated into the rear of the car are two 1x1 transparent red plates for the rear lights. Our fire man also has his trusty fire hose which is made up of a yellow 'tap' piece and a yellow 1x1 round brick which is shown in the final photograph at the end of the review. That just about covers the build.

The Verdict

I have to admit I do like the design of the car although simple it is rather effective for the low piece count. It has enough playability on it's own but with only a dust bin fire to put out our little fireman might be twiddling his thumbs for most the day. This would make a great little addition to any Lego City collection. I do recommend this set if you are able to get your hands on it. We must leave it here as our busy fireman has a dust bin fire to attend to!

Lego Creator Parrot Set (30472) Review

Lego released the Lego Creator Parrot Set as promotional freebie that available back in January 2016. You could get the set with a calendar token at Lego brand stores. In the UK, Europe, Australia and New Zealand you were also able to get this promotional freebie with a qualifying purchase from Lego Stores and Lego's online shop in May 2016. It consists of 43 pieces. There are no minifigures in this set and the pieces are loose inside the polybag along with the instruction leaflet.
The Build

Whilst this is only a small build the detail and playability is great. It is a very colourful parrot consisting of red, yellow, black, grey, two shades of blue and white pieces with black print for the eyes. I'm not usually a fan of Creator sets myself but I have to say I really do like this little creature. It is definitely an improvement on the previous Lego Creator Parrot (30021) which I also have.
The parrot has three moveable parts. The two wings which are pivoted on a ball connector for rotational as well as directional movement. The tail is connected via a double clip piece and moves vertically.
The Verdict

So that brings us to the end of this simple but effective little set. Whilst I do prefer not to have sets without Minifigures myself I have to say this little creature is one of my favourite polybag builds. I definitely recommend this set. My daughter seems to love him although she is only almost 2 at the moment so he will become hers in just over a year when she is old enough to take good care of him. I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read through my review and I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Our little parrot would like to say; "So long and thanks for all the fish". I think he has been watching too much television.

A Spaceman came travelling...

Hello Readers,

As well as reviewing Lego on my blog I will also be posting giveaways as you can see there is currently one live at the moment.
I will also be posting anything else Lego related.

Which brings me to a piece of art I am currently working on which I started late yesterday evening.

I decided to draw this picture from a photograph posted on a Lego facebook page by a gent called Steve Hart.

This is the piece so far. I should hopefully have it finished in a few days at most.
I am undecided at the moment whether to colour it, leave it plain or shade instead; - however I am swaying towards colour, as Lego is and should be bright and colourful !

Feedback highly appreciated :)

This may be up for sale in the near future.

Lego Series Minifigures Ribba Framing - Prototype

Hello Readers,

I haven't posted a review for a few days yet. I will be posting more reviews as soon as possible.

In the meantime I really want to get my Lego Series Minifigures framed.

I have custom drawn all of my backgrounds in Illustrator. I have done the following below.

As I have custom drawn the backgrounds in Illustator they are in Vector format. Vector is line art, as opposed to pixels it is instead made up of lines and points. Which means in short, it doesn't matter how big these are enlarged they will never pixelate or loose quality. To get them ready for printing I have had to save them as pixel based .png files. However they are saved in an extremely high resolution. 12000 x 12000 to be precise. This might sound like jargen to you, don't worry. Just think, a Full HD television is 1080p (which means there are 1080 pixels from top to bottom)
What this all comes down to, is the photo prints I recieve should be extremely sharp and of a high quality.
Here are some close up pictures for you to see.

These are for my own personal use to mount my Lego Series Minifigures in. They will be mounted into Ribba Frames.

I put together a prototype background and frame yesterday to see exactly how the minifigures are going to fit inside and whether or not any bricks would need to be moved.

I started by taking some old card I didn't need. Drew a square big enough for the background and cut it out.

From there I marked out the measurements and drew a template based on the measurements of my illustrator designs. I then placed white tack where each brick will be. This is just a temporary option, the final frames will have the bricks glued on.
From there I just stuck each inverted slope where they need to go. I have used all 2x3 slopes here however my final frames will use 2x2 inverted slopes for the majority of the minifigures and some 2x3 inverted slopes for those that are too big for the 2x2.
With all that done I just needed to now check that all my minifigures will fit nicely onto the bricks and then into the frame. However I did come across a little problem with Ursula. The bottom part of her is just a teeny tiny bit too big to fit on the 2x3 slope so I had to cut a little bit out of the cardboard backing for her to fit properly. When I my final frames I will be backing the prints onto card so I will do the same for her.
So there we have it. The Disney minifigures fit perfectly. I will however swap Ariel over to the far right where Maleficent currently is. Maleficent will be moved to the left one and the other minifigures (Cheshire Cat, Alice and Stitch) will all be moved to the left one. The reason for this is then I will have one 2x3 inverted slope in the bottom left for Ursula and one in the bottom right for Ariel. The remaining minifigures will all be mounted onto 2x2 slopes.

That's it for now, I just wanted to share this project with you. I just need to check my other minifigure series will fit into the frame properly without the need for moving any of the brick locations, once that is done I will be ordering my photo prints which are ready.

Lego City Volcano Starter Set (60120) Review

Lego released the City Volcano Starter Set as part of a new sub-theme of Lego City. The set is and sub-theme is themed around Volcanic Exploration. The set retails at £8.99 and has a piece count of 83. As a starter set it comes with four minifigures. The box contains one un-numbered bag and one instruction booklet.
Minifigures

The set contains four minifigures, two males and two females. Here's a quick look at them in all their glory, accessories included. We have our female researcher with camera, male driver of the ATV then a female miner and a male minifigure with a metal detector both fully suited with oxygen tanks and helmets.

Moving on let's look at our female researcher / photographer minifigure in more detail. She has a cheeky smile showing her teeth and is wearing lipstick. She has metallic silver printed half framed glasses and brown hair which forms at the back into a pony tail. Her torso is printed with a white lab coat, open at the front showing her blouse. On her lab coat she has an identity badge and two pens in one of her pockets. She also has back print on her torso. She has plain light smokey blue legs.

Our second minifigure doesn't have any accessories as seen above however he drives our ATV which will be covered further in this review. This dude looks pretty roughed up, he's got facial stubble and a graze on his face. But this doesn't bother him in the slightest hence his half grin! Then again this guy is prepared for action whilst exploring volcanoes. Whilst his torso looks similar to the next two minifigures it has a different print. The torso base colour is Khaki Green, printed with a shirt and a utility belt. Clipped onto the belt I believe is a radio, or is it some sort of scanning device? Who knows :) with your imagination it can be anything you want it to be! On the back of his torso his utility belt is continued around his body and has four pockets. Above that is a printed compass which I would believe is the logo for the company he is working for. He shares the same plain light smokey blue legs as the female minifigure above. Last but not least, he is nicely equipped with a tan coloured baseball cap which has a hole in the top.

The last two minifigures I will cover together as they don't really differ other than their heads. The female has a little smile and lipstick but don't let her looks fool you, she looks like she can handle herself. The male doesn't look happy, then again he is next to a scorching volcano hence why he is sweating! They both wear the same outfit which is Khaki Green in colour. We have both front and back print on our torso consisting of a grey utility belt and safety harness. The front has a zip which is about a third open revealing a brown top underneath. The silver detail on the torso such as the zip, buckle clip and rings are a shiny silver metallic print. On the back we have what looks like an ice pick on the utility belt. The harness is continued either side of the compass logo which has an image in the center of a volcano.
The helmet for the two minifigures goes on in three parts as you may or may not have seen in previous sets such as fire service related ones. The oxygen tube piece goes on first which integrates nicely with the minifigures oxygen tank. Then the visor is attached to that just like any other helmet and finally the white safety hat goes on top to form the complete helmet. Pretty genius if you ask me!
The Build

Whew! Well that's our minifigures covered. Now on to the build itself. Which isn't much in a starter set, but it sure adds to the set. First up we'll review the 'Volcano'. I have to say I'm not impressed, but I suppose in such a small set this was the best they could have hoped for. I don't know why but when I first saw the grey funnel piece I thought it was going to be a cement mixer! The volcano build sits on a 4x6 brown plate, has a handful of pieces and a 'volcano erruption' function. The blue crystal which I believe is what the team are searching for, and two transparent orange round 1x1 bricks are inserted into the volcano. You can then push the black lever down quickly on the side to launch them out the top! The build is finished off nicely with a green three leafed wild plant piece.
That brings us to our final build. The ATV itself and glowing hot transparent orange boulder! Lets first look at the boulder. I believe these two pieces used to form the volcano are new pieces made this year. I haven't seen them in any other set. Instead of splitting horizontally they split vertically down the middle which makes them even more awesome! Inside we have a stud on each half, one of the halves has a blue crystal attached!. This is what our team are searching for!
Last but not least we can now look at the ATV. With lime green being the main vibrance of the ATV we have our volcano compass logo on the front. We have a bar under the radiator grill and transparent white 1x1 roof slopes for lights on the front. On the back we have two transparent red studs for rear lights. There is a yellow 1x1 plate with clip on the back to hold the radio. Above that is a black aerial and to the side of that is grey chain. The rest of the ATV is your standard four wheels, other pieces to make up the rest of the frame and bike and then of course the handles. The chain can be attached to the volcanic boulder to allow the driver to drag it to a safe spot to be cracked open!
The Verdict

Well that brings us to the end of another fantastic set. I do like this set, it is different. I do want to get the other sets in the long run, but now my funds need to recover. Not to worry, I've got more than enough sets to review for you wonderful folks! I can't really fault this set, other than the volcano itself is well... small. I would definitey recommend this set at £8.99 as with all the starter sets it's great for bulking out your figures for a particular theme. Or sub-theme in this case. I also find the ATV quad bikes pretty cool! I will probably use these figures myself in a space alien theme than a city as I think they will go perfectly with their outfits!

Lego City Fun in the Park - City People Pack (60134) Review

Lego released the City Fun in the Park - City People Pack (60134) set on 1st June 2016. It retails at £34.99. It has a piece count of 157 and comes with an outstanding fourteen minifigures, a dog and a little baby minifigure! This is available from many retailers as well as Lego themselves. The box contains three numbered bags and three instruction booklets.

As this is a Minifigure People Pack then I am going to do this a little differently to the previous review. I will cover each mini build in the set along with it's minifigure(s) as per the instruction booklets. So without further ado let's get into the set itself!

Wheelchair with Disabled Man

So first up we have the disabled minifigure and his wheelchair. The wheelchair and the back wheels I believe are new and exclusive (as of this review) to this set. Which makes it even more exciting! I know for myself this wheelchair was one of the main selling points of this set.

The Minifigure himself has quite a generic but happy face. Wearing his grey beanie hat he's also keeping nice and warm with his light grey hoody over his dark red sweater. He has plain earth blue legs

Hot Dog Stand with Chef

Next up we have the hot dog stand with a chef minifigure. The hot dog stand itself is simple but effective. On the bottom it has a set of wheels on one side and a stand on the other. A little lid on top opens to reveal a see through compartment where the little fella keeps his hot dogs. On top you have a red and yellow 'taps' which are obviously the sauce bottles! Ketchup and Mustard with your hot dog sir? Why don't mind if I do! A little umbrella is perched on top to keep him and his hot dogs in the shade. Then a simple piece for handles.
The set officially comes with only one hotdog, but also comes with a spare. So you get two! You only get one bun though, which I believe is a new piece! I have also seen these in the Lego Friends Amusement Park Hot Dog Van (41129).

The Chef minifigure consists of a male with a mustache. He wears his chef's hat and coat with pride. The torso is white with a chef print on the front and some back printing. He has plain brick yellow (tan) legs. He holds what appears to be a pair of tongs which he uses to serve his delicious hot dogs!

Bus Stop with Business Lady

Not really much to cover for the next build, it's just a simple printed bus stop sign on a 2x2 base light grey poly with a business lady waiting patiently for the bus to arrive.

The business lady minifigure has a happy looking face with lipstick and wears a pair of glasses. Her suit is earth blue and is only buttoned twice at the front revealing her shirt underneath. The torso is both front and back printed and the legs are plain. She has short and maintained brown hair and holds her briefcase, which is empty as she's already had her lunch today.
My only dislike with this minifigure is the yellow of her chest. As it is printed onto the blue torso is has a green tint and doesn't really match the colour of the face very well, making it look a little odd.

Roundabout with Little Blonde Boy

The roundabout is cool! The main round green plate is 8x8 studs in size. The smaller 6x6 plate spins freely on top. Finished off with 4 yellow railings for those little children to hold on to! Included in this minibuild is a cute little tree. There are two of these trees in the set.

Here we see our first of many child minifigures in the set. He is a blonde haired boy with a freckled and happy face. That is of course unless you turn the head around, then you get his sad face. He wears a royal blue hoody which is unzipped at the front to reveal his primarily lime green polo shirt. He has dark tan coloured legs, which are short as he is a child sized minifigure.

Bicycle with Cyclist

Here we have a simple red bicycle with a transparent yellow stud on the front for the 'bike light'. This cyclist knows that safety is important especially when riding his bike at night.

This is one of my favourite minifigures in this set. His black and green jacket print on his torso is awesome! He has plain black legs to go with. Again our smart cyclist wears a white helmet to keep him safe.

Bench with Grandparents

Here we have a 6 stud long park bench for our tired elderly grandparents to rest on whilst they watch their grandchildren play. The bench itself is earth blue and consists of two different shades of grey for the base and the pieces holding the back on. We also get a beautiful pink flower.

These two minifigures are fantastic! I think these might even be my first eldery minifigures I've had in a set. Our lovely grandmother has a very friendly face with rather large light brown framed glasses and red lipstick. She has short but quite a big white hair piece. Her torso is a blue knitted cardigan which is printed both sides. Her legs are a plain light sand colour. Grandpa looks a bit more composed than grandma but he's still a friendly fella. He has a nice knitted v-neck jumper which is a light brown nougat colour, there's no back print on this minifigure's torso. With his white shirt collar poking out. He has plain brown legs.

White Picket Fence with Painter Lady

Very simple build here. A white picket fence on a green 2x4 plate. We also have a light grey bucket with a dark tan coloured handle. The only sad thing with this is Lego did not include a white stud for the 'paint' in the bucket. I've actually added one of my own as the set doesn't feel complete without it. I am a little dissapointed that they did not include one in the set.

Here is a picture of the bucket with my added white stud inside. It just looks so much better. Lego have included studs in sets with buckets before to portray that is full of paint, hence my slight dissapointment with this.

Our female minifigure appears to have a slightly happy smile. As most female minifigures do she is also wearing lipstick. She has nice brown hair which goes into a little pony tail at the back. Her head does have two faces printed, with the other side being a rather worried look! She is wearing light grey overalls over her white top. There are various splatters of paint all over her body and legs. This minifigure does have front print on her legs! She is one of my favourites.

Football and Goal with Siblings

We have a simple goal set on top of a 2x6 green plate. The goal itself is actually a window frame, topped with a smooth 1x6 tile. It comes with a football which is pretty awesome. This is the first and only football I have out of all the Lego I have! So it is a nice addition to my collection.

I believe these two are brother and sister. The boy has a cool half smile on his freckled face. He wears a blue baseball cap and a white tee shirt with red sleeves. He has a picture of Benny's head printed on the front. He has short earth blue legs. The girl has light mouse brown hair. Also with a freckled face she has a slight half smile. She has round frames glasses which are a slightly dark red in colour. She wears a pink striped vest with a kitty logo on. Her legs are a medium sky blue. They seem to be having fun playing football together!

Park Bench with Father and Daughter

I love this bench! The design is fantastic. It is 8x6 studs total in size. Consisting of light grey and brown for a metal and wood look. We get a little picnic bag, a croissant and a red apple. But we really to watch the family dog. He's after that red apple!

For our minifigures we first have the father. He wears a red lumberjack style shirt printed on both sides and has plain blue legs. He has a black hair which goes well with his black facial hair. His blonde haired daughter has a few freckles but I honestly think her hair is dyed because her eyebrows are brown. She wears a light blue hoody which is open at the front revealing her purple round necked top with a star in the middle. She has short lavender coloured legs. Our family dog is brown with black printed detail on his face and sides.

Lawnmower with Gardener

Here we have a really cool looking lawnmower build. The only downfall is that the wheels do not freely turn because they are held by clips.

Our minifigure is wearing green overalls over a red shirt with blue crossed stripes. She has a slightly happy but more serious face with lipstick. Her hair is a darker brown and is quite long. I have removed the hair below as well so you can see all of her back print.

Pushchair with Baby and Mother

This is the main reason I've bought this set! This little baby is too cute for words. I believe this is the only set as of this review to have this little minifigure in.

Below you will see the baby minifigure in all it's detail. I've put mommy next to the baby so you can see the size difference. He wears a simple white babygrow and has the most adorable face ever! His head does turn and is seperate to his body. The neck piece and head is smaller than a standard minifigure. The arms, hands and legs are one solid mould so sadly they do not move. The mother herself wears a lavender blouse which is open at the front to reveal her lighter lavender coloured top. She is also wearing a necklack. She has red lipstick and holds a bottle for her baby. She has sky blue legs. Her hair is short and wavey and is of a lightish orange brown colour. She has a second print on her head where she is wearing pink framed sunglasses and is smiling more with her teeth showing.

The Verdict

Well as we come to the end of a long but worthwhile review I have to say I am very happy with this set. It contains an astonishing 14 minifigures, 1 baby minifigure and a dog as well as several cool looking mini builds. I have also noticed with this set that the shade of the hands is more accurate to the faces. I noticed sadly through many previous Lego sets that there hands were a lighter shade of yellow than the heads. It appears Lego have sorted this, which is a good thing. My only concern when looking to purchase this set was the price. At £34.99 I strongly believe it is overpriced. Considering it only contains 157 pieces, if this was a normal set I believe it would retail for £14.99. Of course, I don't expect it for that. As it is a minifigure pack. However I just can't justify an extra £20 above what a similar piece set would retail for because it is primarily minifigures. I believe that £24.99 would have been a fairer price for this set. That said the only reason I bought this set at £34.99 was because of the free Creator Fountain (40221) set. I see that I've paid £34.99 for both the sets. I did of course have to spend a bit more to get the order over £50 for the free set. All in all this is a great set. Other than the price and the lack of a white stud for the paint bucket I am happy. I do recommend this set.
